NatPower UK emerges with one of Britain’s largest private clean energy portfolio’s including a 12.5GW BESS pipeline.

NatPower UK has unveiled plans for one of the country’s largest clean energy build-outs, with a pipeline of 13 projects for a total of 12.5GW and 100GWh of long duration battery storage (BESS) and renewable generation now in development and in NESO’s grid reform gate 2 process. Ten projects applied also to Ofgem’s Long Duration Energy Storage Cap & Floor Window 1, and all of them, for 9.5GW and 76 GWh received eligibility confirmation by Ofgem to progress to the next project assessment stage with Ofgem.  

Backed by over £10 billion of private investment and requiring no government subsidies. Part of the pipeline is already fully consented. This programme positions NatPower among the UK’s biggest clean energy investors, directly supporting the Government’s Clean Power by 2030 mission and providing the grid stability and renewables storage needed to deliver net zero.
The UK currently operates a total of just 8GW of energy storage. At the same time, the grid operator, NESO, forecasts that over 50GW of flexible power supply will be required by 2035 to balance renewables, cut waste and deliver system security, to which a new need of at least 7GW of long term duration is needed for the impact of ship and ground logistic electrification to reach IMO and UK government targets. NatPower’s portfolio directly addresses this shortfall, significantly reducing the need for standby gas generation, anchoring the UK’s position as a clean energy leader.

A Portfolio Built for National and Local Benefit

The ability to deliver 12.5GW /100GWh of reliable long-duration energy storage (LDES) across the UK directly into the transmission network that will stabilise the grid and enable more renewables to provide cheap, clean power, dramatically reducing the UK’s reliance on gas. These projects are being developed at strategic hubs across England and Wales to relieve grid bottlenecks, strengthen industrial competitiveness and ensure national coverage while maximising regional benefits.

  • Reducing Curtailment: The UK paid over £3.5bn annually to shut off wind generation. NatPower’s large-scale BESS will store this excess renewable electricity and release it at times of peak demand, saving consumers money and slashing reliance on fossil fuel backup. At the same time the UK pays unused polluting gas plants just to be available to generate at high costs.
  • Brand new 400kV substations and transmission-grade infrastructure at strategic locations across the country to resolve grid bottlenecks and reduce the financial and resource demands on a very constrained NGET. That can save 4-5 years to deliver the government decarbonisation goals, granting a clean grid by 2030.
  • Supporting Industry: By delivering reliable, affordable and low-carbon electricity, energy storage hubs strengthen the competitiveness of the UK’s steel, chemicals, advanced manufacturing, hyperscale data centres, and logistics sectors.
  • Empowering Maritime Electrification: Some of NatPower’s projects integrate energy storage with port charging infrastructure, enabling ships to plug into clean power while at berth and recharge their growing electric propulsion systems, a first step toward zero-emission/zero air pollution UK shipping.
  • Driving Regional Growth: Projects due to be in Teesside, Yorkshire, Wales, the Midlands, and the South East will create hundreds of skilled green jobs, expand local supply chains, and invest directly in communities.

NatPower’s pipeline is already moving into delivery. The company’s recently announced Teesside GigaPark, a fully authorised £1bn privately financed 1GW/8GWh project at Sembcorp’s site at Wilton International, will be the UK’s largest and most advanced battery storage facility. Designed from the outset to support both grid balancing and port electrification, Teesside demonstrates the integrated model NatPower is rolling out nationwide.

Creating sustainable communities

NatPower UK is also committing to making substantial contributions each year to the local communities around its projects, once operational, via a community benefit fund managed by Evogea, an industry-leading, dedicated charitable foundation. Potentially donating over £1 billion to its 13 projects over the next 40 years. Delivering sustainable social, economic and environmental uplift. Evogea will operate totally independently, aiming to create the most sustainable communities in the UK through bespoke, community-driven initiatives for individuals, SMEs, and local community groups.

NatPower is also committed to achieving over and above the legally required biodiversity net gain (BNG) of 10%, aiming for over a 100% BNG on every one of its project sites. Through careful site selection, design, and long-term management, NatPower integrates conservation and habitat creation into all projects, respecting the land, supporting healthy communities, and enhancing local biodiversity.
